The way I interpret this poem, is that it is just about lady in a hospital who has received flowers and how she feels about that. It doesnt have a universal theme, or does it contain any fundamental issues. So yes, maybe it is just a random story. But what makes this poem so good and emotive is the way that Plath has strung her words together and the way she expresses her feelings. It is true that it is merely about some flowers, but Plath was not a normal person but someone who read things into the minutest and common household stuffs. Anything she saw could trigger a feeling and that was what she felt about the tulips. To her the tulips represented something to her that is menacing. So what you read and receive from this poem is what you want to believe. You can think that this poem is merely a crazy woman rambling about nothing, or you can choose to make Tulips mean something to you.

Those who criticize Plath's work are those who do not have a enough background knowledge about her. The poems she wrote were to do with serious emotional experiences which she thought to be taboo, therefore poetry was an escape route for her.
The 'tulips' are a symbol of fertitlity, and yes of course she is jealous as she had just miscarried, meaning she feels she has failed her position within society, as a typical 1950's woman was meant to be a housewife! . . . 'My teaset'. Furthermore she attempted suicide as she was obviously seriously depressed, perhaps being married to Ted Hughes was one of the reasons, his second wife also comitted suicide, now is that just a coincidence?!
If poeple are going to read Plath's work it is a good idea to do much research, otherwise she does come across as a wierdo. But understanding as best one can, i am now sympathetic towards her.

to start i had often been on bed in some hospital in my young ages. now i am not that much weak, and this poem gives me a nostalgic feeling of my past days, about the cool conditions of the hospital, the mercyful nurses, the pleasant white things all around, everything is still a good feeling for me, eventhough being ill is a bad thing. good, really good...and i herewith express my appreciation for the poem and the poet.

this poem is a clearly disturbed piece of work on how sylvia felt she could not handle the somewhat overwhelming power that society and its responsibilities has. To be honest its pretty long and boring though.
